Stuck in fourth Gear

I drove to the Store and noticed that I could not get into third gear so I went to fourth, But now I can't get it out of fourth gear. I think that i may need to rebuild the shift tower but I cant find any parts brakedowns or instructions on how to do this. Anyone have a site I can down load this information or hear of this problum before. 91 Explorer XL

I also have a 91 2wd that had the same problem - I removed the shifter from the top of the tranny to take a look. (4 screws, upper rubber boot, pinch bolt, upper shifter, lower boot, three torx screws, then lower shifter.) When I did, I noticed that the transmission was actually in third, but the shifter was in fourth. I relocated the shifter to third gead, put it back together, and it shifted. It seems that there is something bigger that caused the shifter to get out of wack, because it is sometimes hard to shift now and I have no 5th gear (the shifter will go into 5th, but it just whines and won't pull). I will let you know if I find out anything further.

Hmm...there was a dealership here with an X that had the tranny locked in 4.I think they ended up scrapping the tranny. Good luck guys.

This could actually be a very simple issue. My explorer had the same issue, but mine had problems getting into gear. I found out that the slave cylinder in the 5 speed transmissions go bad quickly and easily. after i had it replaced, there was no problem. it was like a brand new transmission
