I need some help everybody. I have a 1996 Explorer, and of course here it is one week before christmas and I'm having problems. And with a 10 hour drive planned for christmas, I don't need to be stuck on the side of the road with two kids. Anyway, I went out this morning and started it to turn on the defrost. Got in it 10 min later and put it in reverse, it cut off on me. Started it right back up. On the way to work at one stoplight I had to put one foot on the brake and had to give it gas to keep it going. Then when I got to work I was sitting in it and listening. No noise, but all of a sudden the RPM's would drop down to almost nothing, with the car shaking. Then it would catch itself up and go back to 900 - 1,000 RPMs and run fine. A few minutes passed and it did it again. Could this be the fuel filter. I have to figure this out quick and get it fixed. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks.

yeah i would check the Idle air control valve or the throttle position sensor

similar probs....

I am having similar problems, but I have actually changed my IAC with new to no avail. I also have a leaking convertor, so I was wondering if the rear O2 sensor reading lean would make irratic idle possible. Also, a friend of mine said that it could also be the mass air flow sensor because it doesn't throw a code. Haven't changed that yet, but I'll let you know.
