what is that silver box behind the rear passengers side quater trim panel in my '92 its a aluminum box that looks like it should be a amplifier. however it has twice any many wires as any amp should need. also my haynes books diagram has the HU wired straight to the speakers and i have an XLT to no fancy stereo stuff.

Yep, it is the amp, if you are replacing the H.U., you can feed the low signal from the RCA plugs of the new head unit into the harness going to the amp. I did that on the 93 XLT we used to have and it worked great. You would have to purchase a deck with 4 low level outputs, plus a "premium sound plug", and some solder-on RCA plugs to mate with the ones on the deck. Sounds complicated, but a good stereo shop should be able to help you out.:D

As far as the Haynes books and Chilton's books go, they make good door stops, or to prop up a short table leg, but they are not suitable to use as a repair manual.:(
