Hi everyone,
Does anyone have an opinion on the advantages/disadvantages of supercharging vs stroking. I have a 99 EB w/ 5.0 and I only found two sc kits. Explorer Xpress and Powerdyne. I pull a 3500lb trailer daily and I want more UMPH! I'm looking for 350hp and 400ft/lbs of torque, but I need it in the LOW RPM range.. I read up on Trolls and will try contacting him asap. The stroker kit I'm interested in is a 347ci. Thanks for the help. Dom

i vote for the stroker. personally, i love low end power and true (non bolt on, noisy as hell, grunt) power. with the right combination you should be able to push those numbers easily and have tons of fun doing it. for me i tow a boat almost constantly in the summer and a new cam, and all the air flow bolt on goodies were the answer and i wouldn't have it any other way.

yea, man... go for the stroker! just remember youre gonna have to spend money on other stuff like bigger injectors, fuel pump, pressure regulator, etc.

I'm not familiar with a stroker?

i know its childish.. but that made me laugh.

i was thinking the exact same thing. stroker=funny

a stroker kit increases engine displacement. in this case, he's talking about a 302 (5.0 liter) and "stroking" it out to a 347 (5.6 liter).

stroker=fast too!

If you want simple power, a supercharger is the only option. Bolt it on and go, thats it. You don't have to go screwing around with changing your fuel pump or injectors or anything. Roots style is want you want for low range, centrifugal style superchargers are more suited to race cars or cars that will operate at high RPMs because thats when they make most of their boost. A Roots type supercharger (such as the EE one) makes most of its boost at low RPM, but mid and high levels as well. And although everything else in EEs catalog is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced, the supercharger isn't a bad deal. I'd buy that one for myself, but my teacher (I'm in a Ford training program) knows a guy at SVO and he's looking into getting us a deal on superchargers.

If you really want to, sure a stroker will give you good power too, but its more work and in the long run probably more money too. Also, you can't just take it off if say you bought a new Explorer.

I was contemplating the same thing, but supercharging is the easiest way to go. Plus I'm sure its a cool feeling to be able to say you have a SUPERCHARGER on your EXPLORER (without lying :D )

OK.,..Stroker is a wee bit costly..$5-7K complete....Supercharger it is. How does everyone feel about Explorer Xpress' Eaton?

If you want a EE Supercharger, you better hurry because they only have about 3 or 4 left and they're not making them anymore.

I say go with both

i think someone mentioned the powerdyne charger makes more hp.. not sure though

The Powerdyne may make a bit more HP but at high RPMs because its a centrifugal style supercharger.

If you don't want to spend a lot, Ford Racing makes a supercharger for 5.0L Explorers for around $2500, but adds just 65hp. Also its centrifugal style, but if you don't want to spend a lot it might suit your needs.

Personally I'd go with the EE or some other Roots style supercharger all the way.

stroker motor

I wouldnt go with a 347 stroker, there is too much work involved. I would check the 331 stroker, it is the same price. With the 347 you need to do a lot more work with the cylindar walls and injectors, etc. 331 is a little bit easier. email me if you have any more questions regarding these swaps

a 331 is a gimic it is the same amount of work. no matter what you need bigger injectors unless you dont plan on making more power then stock. a 347 in a explorer is easy the hard part is getting the right combo for what you want. a 347 crate motor with a powerdyne motor will run circles around any EE blower on any 347. they make enuf torque down low already that the ee blower does not have enuf advantage over the powerdyne to justify giving up all the extra top end power a powerdyne will give you. a nice stroker motor setup right will be awsome in a explorer i would say stroker motor and then go with spray later on if you want to go faster.

Isn't the Ford Racing kit just a branded Powerdyne kit? If this is the case couldn't you but they Ford kit and just stick a smaller pulley on it for more boost (along with other fuel system mods)?? At almost a grand less for the Ford kit you could stick a little more money in it and get the same power at the Powerdyne for less money. Right?

you are right on that one. we have tried every pulley powerdyne makes and at 5000 rpm we where only able to make 10 pounds at the most. so buy the ford kit and buy the rest of the mods you need and make it a real monster of a truck.

I want TORQUE! This isn't a race car. You'll never really make a 4000lb behemoth quick. I would like to step on the gas though, and have the truck get out of it's own way without taking it up to 6000RPM's. I'm not looking to try to outrun a civic to the next stoplight(not yet!) I just ordered Cobra 1.7 roller rockers and the cat-back exhaust kit from Gibson. I dynoed the truck yesterday and it made about 165HP at the rear wheels. The only mod so far is a KKM air intake. I have a Super chip but under load it was causing predetonation so I pulled it. After I decide which way I'm going to modify it then I'll try the chip again. I'll redyno it as soon as I put the rollers and the exhaust on and see where I'm at. Thanks for all the imput. Dom

i want TORQUE... this isnt a race car...
then why did you get 1.7 rockers? i hate to tell you but all they do is move the powerband up. you just shifted your powerband up more RPM's, get 1.6 rollers.
