Hi,Ijust finished changing all the fluids in my 99 limited, and noticed that the ft seal on transfer case was leaking. So i figured no big deal, went to local Ford dealer and purchased seal, removed ft drive shaft to find there is no nut on the output shaft flange. Haynes manual is pretty vague on this, says to remove snap ring, where is this snap ring and how do you remove it? Has anyone had this same probllem. It is an electronic transfer case.

Thanks in advance, djwgmc

transfer case seal

It seams that there are many conflicking answers to my question. I went to local trans expert and he said that it was a dealer issue. So went to local Ford dealership and talked to mechanic directly and he said that the transfer case has to be removed and disassembled in order to remove the ft stub shaft to replace seal, 6 hours labour. I am going to try and get a Ford overhaul manual so I can see for myself.

I wish I could help you, but I know the one on my '95 has the flange nut. I then looked it up on my '95 CD to see if it listed alternate mounting methods, but all it shows is the nut.

Hopefully someone with a later manual can look up the info for you. I am going to rename your thread a little to help get some interest.

Hi, thanks for your help, got my answer, yes the transfer case (44-05 C-trac) has to be removed and disassembled in order to replace the front output shaft seal. The front stub shaft on the case has a snap ring retainer that has to be removed from inside the case. I guess the designers thought the seal would never fail??

Yes, the rear seal can be replaced from the outside. For the front, the case must be taken apart. It is unusual for the front to go bad. The 4405 is known to have real problems with the rear case wearing the rear bearing mount. You will notice play in the up down direction with the transmission in neutral. These cases are not hard to take apart and the halves seal with silicone only. Be very careful of the shift rod. It is easy to snap the 1/8" dowel pin. They are rather difficult to install in the vehicle if you don't have a couple friends to help.

I seem to remember they had some problems with the front driveshaft. An out of balance condition is the only reason I can think of why this would wear so soon.

I don't mean to HiJack but i'm having this rear problem, any sufggestions on how to fix, it is just the bearing and seal or what?

What

Yes, it's the what. If you are talking about up down play of the rear flange, the case is worn and you need a new case half. I did a little modification and was able to stick some shim stock in. Not a permenant fix that I would recommend.

Is this rear bearing support wear in the case a high mileage condition or can it occur at any time? I also seen where a company had re manafactured ft case halves because of the shifter rail wearing oblong holes in the case.

Thanks Again Ford....My '98 electronic shift transfer case front seal is leaking also. I noticed it a couple of months ago when I changed the transfer case fluid. Was underneath it this morning and noticed it is getting worse. :( Service manual only told how to replace rear. Looks like I will have to get an estimate.
