tach not working 97 Mountaineer

My tach does not work most of the time, then for no reason it starts working. I am wondering if it has a bad connection. Any suggestions as to what to check? Thx. Mike

I'd focus my diagnosis around the tach. Meaning that your problem is likely the tach or the connections in the instrument cluster. Give the top of the dash above the cluster a good smack when it's not working...

Where does get its information from? I am tired of tapping on the guage, is there no permanent fix?
