ok the ex has developed a rather nasty sounding banging and the engine has been bogging down for a while when most needed,now a mechanic has had a look at the engine and diagnosed a knackered injector and a broken tappet,now is it possible to diagnose an injector broken by revving the engine (he didnt know it bogs down) and can tappets be bought for the ex engine (dont know never had anything to do with this engine lol)
and does any one know where i can get a set of injectors? mechanic says a special tool needed to check which one is broken but at £40 an hr it has to work out cheaper to just replace them all instead of him trying each one in turn!!! so looking for second hand set of injectors.
hopefully will be viable to mend the old girl rather than have to replace her with something i wont like.

Tappets and Injectors

The Explorer engine has 'lash adjusters' to control the valve clerances, which are often referred to as hydraulic tappets. When they fail, they can cause a tapping noise whcih can be heard mostly at the top of the engine and its fairly easy to locate which bank it the failed tappet is on by careful listening. They will most likey fail in the fully open (in which case the valve may not close properly) or fully closed postion (in which case the valve will close but will result in excessive noise. If the valve isn't closing properly, then there will be loss of compression on that cylinder. There's quite a lot of work involved in stripping down the engine to replace the lash adjusters - and there may be secondary damage such as valve seat recession or rocker damage, so it's normally a good idea to budget for replacing all 16.

Replacing fuel injectors is a lot easier and I would normally only replace the failed injector. Bear in mind that the rubber seals may be perished and that there are at leat 2 different types of fuel injector fitted to Ford Explorers.

I would be hard pressed to diagnose a failed fuel injector without being able to pinpoint which one it is and I would also think that the rattling noise which you describe could have other causes. 'Bogging down' may be caused by fuel supply problems, but could also be caused by electrical or even camshaft drive or timing problems (which may cause a rattle).
