The temperature displayed in my overhead console is way off (for example, it read -40F when it was actually 24F) and the value changes way too frequently. The compass seems to work fine.

I've never noticed this before, and I've owned this Explorer ( 2001 XLT V-6 SOHC, 148K miles) for over 10 years.

I did some searching here, but could not find a match.

Any ideas what is causing this ?

The temp sensor could be going bad. It is located behind the grill on the drivers side.

I had the same problem. the temp sensor connector got water in it. cleaned the connector and reconnected has worked great for a year now.

Where is the sensor located ? Is it easily accessed ?

Can you post a picture ?

I think I see it, between the grill and radiator. Kinda threaded looking at the end with a tip. I lifted the headlight cover/shroud to find it.

I assume I'll need to extract it from laying underneath ? Or is there an easier way to get to it /

Here is a slideshow showing what the sensor looks like, where its located, etc.

I tried to clean my original, but that did not resolve the issue, so I replaced it. The replacement sensor cost $18 at Auto Zone.

The sensor simply pulls out of the housing after you pry a couple clips
open - as you can see in the pictures, I pried my a little too hard !
