Temperature gauge problem

2 or 3 weeks ago it started taking 10-15 minutes before it would move. Once it moved, the reading looked accurate. Yesterday it never moved off cold for the 15 minute drive home. When i got home I checked the plug on the sensor, it looked clean and dry so I reseated it.

Occasionally it will read normally and then bounce between normal temperature and "off".

how do i test the sensor and the gauge?

2003 4x4 XLT V6.

Ok, so driving home today i hit a bump and it started working. Several minutes later it was back on cold. I flicked the gauge pod glass right in front of the temperature gauge ad it started working.
