First off, I am new here and new to 4X4 issues.

Vehicle info:
2002 Ford Explorer XLT
Auto Transmission
4.0L V6 Engine
4X4

When the ambient temperature drops to lower 70's, taking off creates a grinding (wump..wump..wump) sound before a "thud" when it fully engages. It never does this when it is warmer outside. Turns and inclines accentuate this but only in the cooler temps.

Any Ideas?

update

I topped off the auto transmission fluid and changed the transfer case fluid. This did not solve the problem. I notice the grinding and non-engagement most when starting out and turning at the same time.
