So, I went on a test drive last weekend of a 2000 XLT with V-8 AWD. 110k miles, $4k asking price.

Result:

Light rust on the bottom of the door interiors. Otherwise, no visible rust. Shackles looked fine. Bottom had a new coat of underbody protectant on it.

Couldn't get the A/C compressor to kick on. Checked fuses and they all looked good. I didn't think to bring my AC Manifold to check pressure to check the charge. Possibly a relay, but unsure. I did have my inspection mirror with me and didn't see any rot on the bottom of the accumulator.

AWD tested fine. Found a nice open parking lot and did a few figure 8s doing lock to lock turns and holding them for a few turns. No noise from the front end at all.

Slight belt squeal, but went away with belt dressing. I steth'd the alternator and PS pump and didn't hear any wierd bearing noise.

Here is my bigger concern and one I need some guidance. When driving down the road, at all speeds, there was a rhythmic noise from the passenger front side. Barely noticeable, could only hear it with the windows down and is only coming from the right front tire. It does have new tires all around so it should have been balanced even though it sounds like either the tire is worn uneven or is out of balance. I just want to make sure it's not something that may be wrong with the AWD or front differential. Any ideas?

It's pretty much my biggest hangup with buying the explorer.

Regards,

Joshua

Could be a hub bearing. Pretty easy to change. I paid around $80 for mine when i had one go bad.

Price seems on the high end for what these seem to be going for. That being said I paid $4400 for mine, but that was at a dealer with a 30 day warranty. I would offer $3000-$3500, and see what they say.

If feasible, I suggest rotating the RF and RR tires to see if the noise moves. If so, then you know it's tire/wheel related and not a big deal. Could the noise possibly be brake system related? The price sounds reasonable. Does the seller have any history on the trans?

I could try the tire rotation idea. It is from a 'dealer', but he is a private dealer without an official lot so I can probably get away with more tests.

If it's just a tire or hub, I'm less concerned. Both are easy fixes.

It definitely wasn't the brakes. I tried lightly riding the brakes with my left foot to see and it made no difference on the sound.

$4k is just the asking price, I'd hope to get it for $3500. No history on the transmission.

Has/will the dealer give you a carfax report on it? If not, send me the vin and I'll run it and PM you the results.
