Tried to do a search for a good thread to throw this in...
I have a 1996 XLT 5.0. Thermostat was shot, failed open but as winter approaches me in Michigan, having a optimal temperature running car was needed (as was the heat!).
Check engine light came on. Pulled the code, confirming thermostat. Went to AutoZone and picked up a new one. After several hours attempting to get it in, something wasn't right, but it was cold and I was done trying.
The next day took a closer look at the part.
There was a slight difference in the lip. Went to Oreilly's with the bad thermostat and the new one (from Autozone), the guy confirmed it was the right one in the system. After a little digging, turns out there are SEVERAL versions of thermostat. I would recommend anyone doing the thermostat replacement to double check that the part is the same, despite what the shop may say.
Seems obvious, but even the Oreilly guy was surprised. With the right part, it's an easy change!
