What was done before you got it? All chains replaced or just the oom12 kit? I had Justin do mine as you need special tools to line up the camshafts. Price was £750 and that included engine out and all parts.

Hi sorry to hear your woes

What was done before? Front and rear? On the front was it just the guide on the crank to jack shaft and/or the jack to cam?

It was unlikely the balance shaft tensioner was done unless the rear was done as this requires the ladder rack (upper sump) to be dropped to access the fixing bolts. So this means engine out. On mine this balance shaft tensioner was awol also the rear was on the way out as the pivot point on the guide had broken though not yet makin noise.

If you decide to do this yourself search the US site for threads and procedures, make sure you have plenty of time, get all the gaskets and you will need the otc-6488 tool kit to lock off the timing. I would say engine out so you can inspect and replace every thing. This means engine crane and stand also required. T30, T55 bits also needed.

I bought the chains, guides and tensioners in a kit from ebay usa came in at about £250 all in. £68 for ladder rack gasket from ford, front timing cover gaskets £60 ish delivered from UK parts importer, new front crank bolt. Also oil, filter, coolant and while the engine is out new plugs (easy with the engine on a stand!!)

I have the tool kit i could lend you for postage but i would need a deposit of £100 as, as much as i beleive people are intrinsically good i keep getting proved wrong.

And if you do pull the engine when you refit make sure the torque converter is fully seated before you mate the 2 else you'll be in the sorry position i am now in.

Finally petetheengineer has also recently done this so he may have a procedure he can direct you to.
Regards

hi im not 100% sure whats been done it just says on bill striped down and replaced timming chain tensioners

i really dont no what to do tbh with car it needs 4 new tyres possable a wheel bearing hub on pass side and now timming chains i love the car but ya know when you feel maybe i should cut my losses ?

How much was that bill coz it could just be refering to the screw in, oil filled tensioners and not the internal guides which are prone to failure.
If the rattle isn't really bad you might get away with just replacing the one guide at the front. This would be a relatively easy DIY job if you have the time, tho you don't know what you have til the cover is off.

You should give justin a call at explorer parts uk, He does all tensioners etc front and rear for £650. You could also discuss your hub issue with him and sure he'll have a set of tyres at an attractive price. But you are looking at a grand but then you have an ex that you can rely on, what are you gonna buy for that money that has no issues??
I'm at the point where i've spent close to a grand on mine and now have another issue but i know when its sorted there will be little else to do (i hope).

if he was more local i mite but hes in wales and im up near newcastle i dont no if my car would make it there / plus i would need get back then go back to pick it up again

I'm sure the car would make it as long as you don't gun it or harshly accelerate. So get a couple of the boys with you, find a guest house nearby, book a couple of days off work and ROAD TRIP.

I all seriousness as i said before you prob only got one guide failed so could do a cheaper fix by just replacing whats broken. Just the front would only take justin less than a day i imagine as he's done so many and knows what he's looking at. Otherwise you are gonna try and sell a rattly ex for (with the other issues) what £400.

As you said you could do it yourself buy a banger to run around in and take the plunge of doing it yourself. the feelin of satifaction you get looking at that huge lump running knowing you had it out and put it in is great (or is that just my masocistic side showing)

Good luck in what ever you decide
Regards

ive emiled him and asked a price etc im out work as it happens but hope to start new job next week so i couldn't take the time off it has a p/plate that came with the car worth around £500 i was going to take that off to try and get some my money back on the car did think of buying another with new chains etc etc 100% this time think the fronts have only been done tbh so its back one gone well going still runs great tbh can just hear them with no radio on etc and pass wheel bearing ok as it happens checked it today

anyway buying another and keeping this one as spares truck but again i dont no

have you considered PX'ng yours to justin for one already finished, hence doing away with travel and digs?

just a thought.

mick.

yeah could work all depends on cash really what sort deal etc ive been in car game for a while i have been a car dealer and do still sell a good few as i side line so swings and round abouts
