2002 Explorer XLT 4 x 4
Well we are getting pretty fed up with our 2002 XLT and at 63,000 miles she's getting to be a real pain in the ass. See my previous posts for all her "ailments".

Today the rear passenger wheel stunk to high heaven, burning smell like the brake was getting locked up or whatever else could cause it and it was so hot you couldn't touch it. Back to the garage tomorrow!

Moving on, we are toying with the idea of getting a 2007 XLT 4x4 V8 typical standard features. Just wanted to know of any major issues out there and as always, any help is appreciated!

Thanks;)

I had a 2004 Mountaineer that I filed a lemon law on because of massive electrical problems. I replaced it with a 2006 Mountaineer that I am now filing a lemon law on because the transmissions are junk and ford either does not know how to fix them or they don't want too. Either way when they take this piece of crap back I'm going to get a GMC Yukon. I have had enough of Ford's crap. Ever since they changed to the new body style in 2001 they haven't been able to get it right. My brother in law has a 2003 Explorer that is nothing but a money vacuum. My advise is to steer clear of anything Ford is pushing off of the assembly line. There is a reason they are losing billions and no longer the number two auto maker.

What kind of transmission problems are you having on your 2006.

I don't think that you are going to find the GMC much better. I sold a C2500 Diesel that went through an average of 500 to 800 dollars a month to keep running (with me doing all of the labour). They had problems with harmonic balancers, crankshafts, injector pumps, and the interior seemed to disintegrate around me. I have a friend with a Suburban that he says is the most expensive vehicle to maintain that he has owned in his life. My Impala was part of a major hidden recall to deal with leaking intake gaskets that caused the camshafts to seize and started to leak at 90,000Km (54,000miles).

I have always tried to buy North American vehicles all of my life to support the "local economy" but what they are pushing down to us is these days is just complete junk. The unions and executives want the big $$$$$ and the product they sell still has to be made cheap enough to compete...... product quality is what suffers, and people like us pay the price in the end when the vehicles fall apart prematurely and cost a fortune to repair because many parts are not servicable and the replacement parts cost is through the roof.

Well..... that's my rant for the day. Is anybody at the "big 3" listening before it's too late, and there isn't anything left but Japanese and Chinese cars because everybody got fed up with their junk?

The problems only pertain to V8 with the 6 speed tranny. It has major shift problems. Sometimes it shifts so hard that you think you were just rear ended. Other times you step on the gas and you think the tranny just dumped because it is slipping so bad. Then at other times when you give it gas you'd swear the rear differential is about to go out. The dealer tells me this is normal that the torque converter is "winding up". I've never heard of a T.C. "winding up". I think this is just the story they are giving the consumer because they have no clue on how to fix the problem. The dealer has performed three reprogrammings and the last time they replaced the mectronic system which is just a high tech word for a valve body and there is no change in how it shifts. The way I see it it is lemon law time becuase I've had it. I know that once in a while someone can get a bad unit, but when it happens to two vehicles in a row it only shows why Ford is loosing billions and about ready to fall on their face. if and when they do I will have no pity on them what so ever. They brought this upon themselves.

fyi, there's a thread on this 2006 moutaineer shifting hard, i think it's about 3 pages of similar problems,,,,,,,, located on the stock 2005 or what ever this section is called. Good luck, d

Well i don't know if this is any help but I ordered a explorer in 99 and have had great luck with it. It has 75.000 miles on it and my son can't wait to get it. It has the v-8 and has been a great vehicle. Today we just ordered a new xlt with the v-8 and pretty well loaded up. I have been researching and looking at other suv's for a year now. And i didn't find anything that in my opinion was better then the explorer. Looking at the prices of the other suv's the explorer was a bargain and a great vehicle.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Makes me glad I bought a V6 (no need to tow). FWIW, my 06 V6 has been the most trouble free vehicle I have ever owned. 7500 miles and not a single item to report. My 98 V6 was pretty darn good too. They are not all lemons. Good luck with your's tho.

my opinion

We have had our 2007 XLT 4X4 for over three months now with no problems other than the second row fold down seat being stuck in place. I have owned Fords all my life (F150's, mustangs, etc) and have had great reliability with all of them. Although this is the first Explorer we have had, we are very pleased with it so far. One thing I can tell you is that when compared to the Trailblazer, the Explorer beats it in almost every category in my opinion (see my previous post on this). GOOD LUCK!
