I posted this on the stock Explorer side with only 1 relevant response, I know I have seen a number of people mention they installed HID's. Please share your experience.

I am considering putting a set of HID's in my 06 Explorer but am a bit concerned about the light focus. I understand the mechanics of the light refraction in the headlight housing and how the focus changes as the whole bulb glows.

That being said I also know that some cars do better with HID's in the factory housings than others. I am looking for real world experience you have had with your HID kits. Were you able to aim them in a fashion that does not blind oncoming traffic but still provides improved lighting? Do you get flashed by oncoming cars regularly? Is the light focused or just sent in every direction?

Thanks in advance

I dropped in some G3 reflectors and they work very well, They drop in place of the factory bulb and they really direct the light well, Never tried the drop in hid bulb only due to horror stories about blinding people. but found the reflector on HID Planet forum. they ran about 150 and work pretty well but had to buy seperate ballast. There are pics and discussions about HID installs on various cars there too. Good luck.

What do you mean by having to buy a "separate ballast"?

the ballast were not included in the pnp hid kit but it did include h13 harness and the lenses and bulbs. The ballast were obtained from ebay. All together pretty much pnp.

G3 reflectors? Please elaborate...

Hey,
My truck is older than yours, but my eBay HID's aren't terrible and don't really blind anyone for the most part. I can't speak for everyone though. I had my buddy angle my headlight housings down very slightly, and I still get flashed maybe once a month, but the light output is awesome. Some members have custom installed projectors into their headlights which controls the flow of light, but I would imagine thats a little difficult.

I have had friends who have told me both driving at me and ahead of me at night say they really weren't bad and they were not bothered by them. Hope I helped somewhat....
