throwing codes????

ok one hour before i fliped and totaled my X i took a friend to his house to get his stuff and we went back to another friends to stay the night, but before i got the chance to turn the car off it died,

mine was a 93 4.0 and i had a k&n intake a jet power module and unbolted the exhaust right after the cats.

so when it died i thought that was weird (the car has never given me any problems before) so i started it and it would idle at like about 250rpm's (barely running) then it would pop back to normal 750 and then back to 250 then would die

id start it again and it kept basically the same pattern and i thought it was running off like 4 cylandars so i took it around the block and it would go then cut out and jerk all over the place so i went back to my friends house,

after thinking for a while i decided it was most definatly related to the exhaust being soo short and i had the peices at my friends house but i wasnt going to put them back on cause i didnt think it would do any good

so then i decided to remove the power module and i did and the car ran fine no problems at all then on the test drive it was 100% fine till i flipped it and totaled it

the reason i am writing this is maybe someone could tell me what the problem really was so i can get a little lesson on what these kind of mods really do to cars
was it throwing a code?

Well no one on this message board likes those jet chips. I remember a test they did one time that showed an explorer actually lost horsepower after adding the chip.
