I have a '98 Explorer Sport that immediately after coming to a complete stop makes a thud noise that you can feel throughout the vehicle. Infact you can feel it more than hear it. It feels like the whole engine is shifting. If I stop very slowly it doesn't happen. My father inlaw said it may be the sway bar bushings, which i replaced and it didn't help at all. I was thinking motor mounts. Any ideas. Your help is greatly appreciated.

me too

i have the same thing on my 94 X sport with a manual tranny :exp:

Mine is an automatic. I really hope and don't think it's the tranny.

hope you figure it out cus I got the same thing on my 98 sport, but if you stop slowly the thud is there when you take off.

Does it do it on a full tank of gas? How about when almost empty? I had a 93 ranger that made a thud when I stopped. Ford came out with a TSB stating that the gas in the tank will slosh around in the tank and due to the shape would slap in the tank making a thud noise. My 99 Ex makes the same noise...

I had the same noise. When I bought my 95 I knew of a problem. Mine did it stopping and when I hit the gas to move quick, or even barely hit the gas if my front tires were in a small ditch/bump.

The problem with my truck when purchased was a front right lower ball joint. I couldn't do it myself, took the part and the truck to a shop and they did it in ab out 4 hours (im sure it took less time).

Problem was solved! I don't know if this is the case on all vehicles with a thud on stop and acceleration, but it was my case. Maybe another note to think about?

Problem solved

The problem was my rear shocks. They were allowing the rear of the truck to come up to high. When this happened it pulled on the drive shaft. When the rear came back down the driveshaft slammed into the transfer case. Put new shocks on yesterday no more noise and a much better ride. If the backs are bad the fronts probably are as weel. I did all 4. What a difference in the ride.

Awsome, I'll have to try that soon, its very annoying!!
