shift cable out of adjustment?

Somtimes while backing, more if over a bump or up hill I will get a lound thump/clank coming from somewhere in the back half of the X and it feels as though I hit somthing with sometimes a little slip. Once or twice it started making kind of a grinding noise and just rolled forward. Also when put in park facing a slight downward incline it will sometimes start rolling with a clicking from somewhere under the X. Going forward is fine and if the incline is going up no problems. I have no codes or flashing lights except for my 4hi/4low lights as I have the t/c unpluged while I am trouble shooting a cotrol track problem. I sometimes wonder if maybe the shifter is out of adjustment and it is not going all the way into park or reverse.

any ideas?

Thanks

anyone have an idea?

This is just a guess but it kind of sounds like the transmission isn't 'holding' a gear. It might be stuck between gears which is that 'clicking' sound you hear while it's moving.

Can you reproduce this situation for a shop or dealer? That might be the best way to diagnose the problem.

Dave.

update

Ok I adjusted the shift cable but it still wants to sometimes roll in park. no grinding in reverse just a good thump somtimes from the slip yoke I think. would loose valve body bolts do this? maybe the park pawl. How hard is it to repair the park assembely? where do you get parts for it?

I did notice while adjusting the cable the first time when I put it into park at the tranny it did not go in solid, felt springy. after a test drive I went to readjust the cable and park was solid at the tranny.

any ideas?
