Was at a drive thru window tonight and noticed a steady tick tick tick coming from my truck.

It's not the OHV valve noise, with my head under the hood I couldn't hear it...with the hood closed standing beside the truck it's very noticeable. The ticking increases with RPM increase, and is steady at idle in all gears, Neutral and Park. It stops for maybe a split second as I shift between any gear. Temp has no effect, it starts when I start the truck, still there after a long drive.

So I think it's in the tranny or the transfer case. The tranny was rebuilt 60K ago, no issues with shifting, slipping etc. The rear output seal on the transfer case had been leaking for a while, I changed it and replaced the fluid last week. Other than that, no issues there either.

I'll go under it tomorrow, but it's a dark and rainy night. Can anyone tell me what this might be, or how/what to check when I get under it? Thanks.

Probably not the transfer case -- it doesnt move when the transmission is in Neutral.

might be a loose torque bolt?

Have the same noise for year now. It sounds like its from directly under center of truck....weird.

Thanks guys. I'll go under today, double check the fluid levels, see if anythings loose. I'll let you know what I find.

Exhaust Leak?

I've noticed that the beginnings of an exhaust leak quite often seemed to start out as a ticking noise tied to engine rpm.

Any way to check that? I guess a bad leak would be marked by soot on the pipe. BTW what's a torque bolt:scratch:

connects the torque converter to the flex plate. I think thats the bolt that was being referred to?

Ah, thanks...Ok all fluids are good. Checked underneath with engine off, nothing loose. Checked for loose bolts/exhaust, all seems tight. Checked with engine running, nothing hitting outside of engine/tranny. From underneath it almost sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine or the torque converter area. Any other ideas?

keep on it cause I have the same damn sound from same place. I have not had a change to get under my truck to find the issue.

Good Luck and post the solution.....Hope you find it soon.

Well, nothing further yet...gotta do the front diff pinion seal this weekend so I'll be able to get more into checking it out while I'm under there...Hasn't been as noticeable lately though:wtf:

Well I found the source of my ticking from under the hood of my truck my #1 spark plug wasn't seated in completely and blew completely out of the head must have been held in by a couple of threads. The head is o.k. but the threads on the plug are screwed I think its where the plug may have hit something in the engine bay. At least its an easy fix but I wanted to show every one what my findings were and hopefully help some guys out there.

If the link doesnt work please let me know

I get a tick just prior to the Catylatic convertor on my truck and i think it maybe rust in the Catylatic convertor bouncing around or maybe a small leak there or the tiny leak in the manifold/y-pipe section could be echoing through the exhaust. I can't pinpoint the tick sound, but it is somewhere in those location on mine.

well I found mine by sheer luck.I was on my way home around 3 am and I was at a stop light when I gave it gas to take off I heard this really loud bang, sounded like a .45 going off, So i was only a few miles from home so I got home and didnt see anything so when I got up this morning I popped the hood and there it was. I have never seen anything like that before but I guess anything is possible. So Im off to the auto store to buy a new plug and fix it. good thing its only that cause Im selling the car next week for something a little better on gas, Its about 3.35 here in Charlotte, Nc.

I want a prius along with my EX.

What does a prius have anything to do with my reply?????? Love my car hate the gas mileage. I dont take kindly to smartasses. I gave a reply to my problem' incase someone else might have the same thing.

You may have misunderstood, its not a smartass comment.

I was talking about my gas mileage on my EX and i like to have something along the lines of a Prius to go with my EX so i can have better mileage is all for when i drive long distances just on trips to relatives.

Thats the part i was refering to about your post is all.

Oh ok well I am very sorry for that :) I deleted that comment I misunderstood your humor on here, That is very easy to do
