How serious is having the chain rattling around? Is it a Ford only fix. ie- Super-specialized-tools? I dont have the skill level to do that, but my uncles a mechanic with know how. Any info would be great. thanks

Search on timing chain cassette....there is a fantastic write up...... the one involves just replacing the tensioner which doesnt appear to be too bad. $50 bucks in parts and 4 or 5 hours of average guy labor. No special tools required.

thanks, ill check that out, but is that the most common problem, just the tensioner?

I can give you an idea of what comes with changing the tensioner.First you do not have to take the engine out ( manuals I've come across say you have to,you don't).This is what has to come out, cooling fan, shroud around fan and crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer).Drain radiater thoe you don't have to take off the water pump it will drain from the ports which run thru the timing chain cover (when pulled)Under the truck you'll have to take out the front 6-7 bolts of the oil pan, next the bolts which run around the outside of the timing cover around the water pump and not the ones which hold the water pump (they don't go all the way thru). You can pop off the timming cover now,the tensioner is the track looking device on the leftside of the timing chain. On installation you'll need either a gasket (for the cover)or just get RTV gasket maker.Sometimes you don't have to change the oil seal (crankshaft seal) but with the chances of it failing after everything put back together, may aswell change it...This is just basic idea,If you need more help (im or reply back to this message) I'll more than happy to advice.(I'm usually on everynight) Good luck...!
