This question is about the timing chain problems that are covered under the Ford TSB 01M01 and 00M12. I am a second owner of a 98 XLT and symptoms of this have popped up at 62k mi. In reading previous posts, I saw a mention that coverage for this extends to non-original owners. My questions:
1. Have any non-original owners gotten Ford to pay for this?
2. Is this a "recall" or a "service bulletin" now
3. How much does it cost?
4. How long before this damages my engine?

I don't think it makes any difference if your not the original owner. If I remember correctly Ford extended the warranty for those parts to 6yrs or 72K miles.
Take it into the dealer - they'll fix it for free if that's the cause of your problems. Mine was done awhile ago and it's been great since.

I am a 2nd owner and mine were replaced last May for free.

what are the symptoms of this? Just the other day I noticed a chatter when it idles. it goes away if i give it a little gas but its right back when the rpms drop. is that it or something else?

Here is what I think I know so far: These bulletins are for two separate things. One is for the camshaft chain tensioner that bleeds down at shutdown and is slow to repressurize. This causes a noise that should go away within 5 minutes of running the engine. On my engine it sounds like a rattle or a fast knocking noise. The other is for the chain guide which had a plastic piece which can break off. This would cause noise all the time, I guess. People have described these problems as sounding like a diesel engine in old posts.

will my explorer be covered.

Hi,

I have 97 Explorer XLT, I never heard any noise from the engine. 10 days back, the truck just died at the hwy.

The garage says that Timing chains is the problem.

could that be the problem ?

my explorer has 125000 miles on it.

will it be covered under this warranty

can something be done ?

Thanks in Advance

Pradeep
