I learned on my Subaru (blasphemy, I know) to reset the ECU quickly by disconnecting the battery terminal and stepping on the brake pedal for 10-15 seconds. This drains all the remaining juice from everything.
It seems to work on the Explorer as well - at least it turns off the CEL. I assume this means the ECU was reset.
