Hey folks.

Trying to get out of MA I lose my manual tranny on the highway (98 Sport 245X 2WD); I was cruising in 4th gear when I heard a loud pop. Now I only have 4th; every other gear is unresponsive and can be shifted into without use of the clutch (including reverse).

Since this truck is lifted, the easy thing is to just replace the tranny and I intend to do that. However, the dealerships have been no help (Ford doesn't provide these... or something).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm in Massachusetts with transportation and can pick up a rebuilt unit at a shop. I have a VIN but no part number (can't see any markings on the tranny body). I'm also pressed for time.

Thanks!

for what it's worth, motorcraft.com says I want:

F87Z7000FARM
Remanufactured Transmission
OHV - 4.0L - ENG#: 98GT-7000-CBA - TRAN: 5R55E

However, isn't the 5R55E just automatic? I'm looking for a 5 speed manual...

Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! The 5R55E is a 5 speed automatic. Look at the sticker at the inner side of the driver's door frame to see what code you have. If you want to go to a shop in your area, look at WWW.Atra.Com for a listing.

Thanks BrooklynBay.

From what I can tell I need a M5R1/M50D-R1. Apparently this is the only manual transmission used in the 98 4.0 V6.

The vehicle is 40 miles west of me right now but I will get my eyes on the sticker before the end of the day.

Thanks.

ALready seen it, thanks again.

But you posted the exploded diagram of the R2... everything I've seen says R1. Known difference (I know about the later HD variant, but that won't help me)?

I've called up some forces and am working my way out to the vehicle to see what kind of damage I can do.

Will post from the field.

Thanks.

Difference between the M50D-R1 / M5R1 and the M50D-R2 / M5R2 is (apparently) that the M5R1 is geared and intended for the 4.0 and the M5R2 is geared and intended for the 5.0.

The above is subject to correction. I'm getting on the road.

ok, so what's a fair price for a remanu or a rebuild on this unit? I got a local guy wants $1150 for a rebuild, but he'll look at the unit to see if it's worth repairing first.

Thanks.
