Ok so my trans has metal in the pan so I know it's a goner already but I have a few questions as to why it died. First of all the engine feels like it is getting very hot very fast. It even boils the radiator over on a 15 min drive. Why? My temp gauge is broke also so that doesn't help. It seems to have trans lines going to the radiator and to a trans cooler mounted in front of the radiator. I know alot of factory coolers are just part of the radiator correct? Is the one mounted in front of it an auxilary cooler? Could the tranny overheating cause the engine to do the same? Or could the engine overheating cause the tranny to die? I like my truck but if I have to replace too many parts on it I may as well junk it and start over. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Heat kills a transmission. Too much heat could also kill an engine. The separate transmission cooler is an auxiliary cooler. Take a look at links in # 8 in my list of useful threads for more information.
