this started last week. Only in the morning when i get in and drive it will not automatically shift out of first but if i run the rpm's up and go from drive 1 to 2 it will shift and then if i go to overdrive it works perfectly. this only happens in the mornings not any other time of the day. I only have to shift it manually once a day and the rest of the time it works perfectly. any ideas why this is doing this????

Likely a sticking governor. It is something you can fix yourself with the transmission in the Explorer. Two things you should read:

Dead Link Removed

and then the thread on here "My A4LD Rebuild Diary"

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98027

to see pics of all of it. Good luck.

What I want to know is how does the transmission know what time of day it is ?

:P

not sure how it knows the time but it does.
I got it figured out by that link Glacier991 posted.
Thanks for the help

its not the "time of day" that the tranny knows its the temp of the fluid that it knows when the truck sets all night the fluid gets"cold" after you drive a little while it warms up and shifts fine i say you have a TFT (transmission fluid temp sensor) problem

i can drive it at night and as long as i drove it in the morning it works, i would think the fluid would be cool down after 8 hours or so

trust me. Check the governor. The A4LD does not have a transmission fluid temp sensor. This is a CLASSIC stuck governor sitution.

will do. Thanks

true i didnt look at what year truck he had i stand corrected check the govenor
