Hello

I am new to this forum. I have a 1996 4dr 4.0 Auto 4x4 with 110k ... Recently, my transmission won't shift correctly. If I granny accellerate then it will shift from 1st to 2nd at around 2600 RPM like normal, but if I put any foot into it whatsoever (anything above granny) then it will not shift into 2nd, and it will keep taching up until i let off the throttle, then it will shift to 3rd... additionally it will not downshift into 2nd. after a few minutes of doing this, the "O/D OFF" light starts flashing on the instrument cluster. If I gun the throttle, then it downshifts to 1st... The fluid level is fine. What kind of problem am I looking at ? If you need any more information, please let me know. I am trying to sell the explorer to get something newer, and would like to get this resolved soon. Thanks.

sounds like the tranny is internally messed up and at this point requires a rebuild.

Tranny problem

From the sound of it your problem centers around 2nd gear. If I remember correctly you have a 4r44e or 5r55e. This transmission uses a band to apply the front planetary(for 2nd gear). If this is the case what you describe could just be a band problem,at 110k I would not suggest trying any adjusting. I would pull the trans and go through it, it is most likely a soft part(seal and clutches)rebuilt. I would not think you need any hard parts(planetaries and such). Hope this is of use. Oh and by the way the OD lamp may be blinking because the PCM is applying the 2nd gear band and not seeing the increase in shaft speed.

Pretty much agree with the above. What is probably happening is it is going from 1>3. Try shifting into manual 2 and see if the vehicle will move anf fells solid. Only other option is if your speedometer is erratic. The speed sensor is used in place of the speed governor to set shift point. Chances you are looking at a rebuild. If you have the logistics to do it, replacing a band isn't that hard.
