'96 XLT 2WD
I've got a 96' 2wd XLT. ~150,000 miles (ododmeter is broken). On cold mornings it doesn't like to shift from 1st to 2nd unless I stand on the throttle or do it manually. It also has a shudder when downshifting at freeway speeds. Is my tranny dying or could these little problems be fixed with a flush and new fluid?

We have a brand new section just for trannys. Glaicer heads it up and he will take good care of you.

I will move it there for you to get his attention.

Thanks Monmix. Generally a no 1-2 shift in a first gen (91-94) when cold is because your governor is sticking. In 96 you did not have a governor. The shift is commanded electronically..... but there are still valve spools involved... Let me ruminate and take a peek in my magic FORD manual and see what we might figure out. I'll post more a little later tonight.

I will wait to hear more from you then. Just to give you a little more information. It does shift out of 1st but doesn't go into 2nd. When I rev the motor, it shifts into 2nd hard around 4 grand and chirps the tires. Then it's fine until the next morning when it gets cold again.

In these transmissions (I am assuming you are 5R55E, but it is equally true in the 4R44 and 4R55) generally troubleshooting consists of checking for electrical faults and then mechanical faults.

By the way.. a 4000 rpm shift is a good way to break a band... be careful.

Anyway... in the "perfect world" you would want to isolate the problem as being IN the transmission, and not because the computer is not sending the correct info. FORD has various tools to enable you to do this, but they are not something the usual home mechanic is going to have (transmission tester, NGS tester, SBDS, WDS etc). Once you have isolated the problem as NOT being related to the computer, your attention turns to the trannie itself. Two possible culprits are the 1-2 shift valve (which could be getting stuck until jarred loose under high pressures) or is could be the shift soelnoid C is sticking, or for that matter it could also be the EPC solenoid. In other words, we're more than likely talking valve body problems.

Soo...my advice - in the less than perfect world of the home mechanic without all the fancy stuff? Swap in a known good VB (using new gaskets) and see if that doesn't cure your problems. If you are thinking of doing this and the fluid ya got is old... do a flush before you do the swap out.... you'll lose a few quarts that way when you drop the pan full of clean new fluid but you won't potentially be gunking up your replacement VB. While you are in there go ahead and replace the filter too.

Any idea how much a vb goes for? If I'm going to be doing that, is it worth my time and money to install a shift kit? Can I do it in the parking lot at my place or would I need a garage?

you can drop the pan and replace the VB most anywhere. rather not be in dirt though (g). Rebuilt valve bodies start at around $250 and go up from there. I am a firm believer in shift kits.... and the 5R55E VB has just had a bunch of new mods and upgrades recently come on the market for it. The VB should have the FORD mod (or equivalent) done on it - see the 5R55E Valve Body rebuild Diary for more info.

A number of folks on this board have done theirs, hopefully they can give you some of their experiences.

VB Sources

Can I just go to Autozone and ask for a valve body or will I have to go to the wrecking yard or tranny shop? Any recommended sources in San Diego?

You can order rebuilt (stock) valve bodies online from www.centralvalvebodies.com. There are oher places as well. DO NOT go to a junkyard. FORD can sell you a new one for about $500.
