I am in the midle of replacing the tranny on my wifes old 94 Explorer thats been off the road about a year, have the old one out and am 1"-1/2" away from mating it up to the motor but no matter what do iit won't move, I can't see anythiing that would hold it up and the alignments pins are in the right spots but I can't move it any more. Can anyone Help Me:mad::mad::confused::confused: What am I hitting or missing Thanks.

what about the torque converter , ?? is it all the way on the input shaft ??

seem like it is, is there a special orientation it needs to be, I looked at the old one and I didn't see anything different to make it go in all the way on the old tranny or am I missing that part??and it needs to go in more??

if you can slide your hand up in between the converter and the housing it is not in all the way , , try spinning it to see if it slides in some more, put a ruler across the front of the tranny housing and see if the converter is in from that,or level with it, ,
if it is in a bit (as much as the flex plate,is out, than it should go , no problem ,
unless there is wiring caught in the top you can't see,

Thats just it, I'm only 1/2" away and the converter has always been inside the housing and I've cleared all wiring out of the way, I'll go double check but I'm sure it's not out past the housing.

ok I just checked and there is no way thats the problem, the housing is at least 1/4" in past the flywheel now, that what got me confused.

Not sure if I'm following your issue correctly...but are you replacing the converter too? If so, lower the trans back down, pull the converter out of the trans, and install it in the crankshaft. Make sure the converter hub fits properly in the crankshaft and allows the converter to slide all the way to the flywheel.

Just to clarify.. this is a test.. don't just hange the converter on the engine and try to install the trans after.. That won't work..

OMG! Thanks for clarifying that Mark. I never considered someone would attempt that. That would have been a disaster.

Rotate the torque converter into the bell housing. Every turn will make it drop down a little more. It has to completely seat into the pump. It's a good idea to install a new flexplate to crankshaft spacer, rear main seal, and flush the cooler lines before you install the new transmission.

Thanks for the help guys, I finally just gave up yesterday and went and worked on my 65 Galaxie instead, I have the old tranny and a spare 4.0 and I'm going to mate them together to see what I am doing wrong outside of the truck instead of laying on my back.I do believe you guys are right and the torque converter is just not in riight even though it seems like it is. I give an update after this weekend as I won't get back to it until Sat. probably.

Just a quick update to say that it is finally in:biggthump Just a note that although I thought I had the torque converter all the way in, it wasn't. I could turn and turn and it wasn't going in any more so I thought it was in all the way but I still couldn't mate it to the block. So after so conversatoions with co-workers and some more reading up on the issue I came to find out that if up lube the end of the TC it would go in, so I pulled the tranny back pulled out the TC and lubed it up and sure enough it went in farther that it ever did before. Just goes to show that with a little lube you can make things go in further;)

the repair manual said just use some tranny fluid for the lude so thats what I did and it worked.
