tranny shot maybe big dreams

okay so i just built my 92 4x4 4" tuff country and 33 mud rovers and locking hubs and new exhaust replace brakes drive shaft and other minor things. The interior is in minTTTTT shape the exterior well is a little rusty not bad for a 92 I love this truck I already needed to replace the gears from 3.27. So yesterday it decided to pop out of drive and back in while i was on the gas BAMMMM the tranys gone every position is neutral now. I live in Nornther va so we have emissions control but I think i can register it at my moms house at lake anna to avoid that. So does anyone have any suggestions should i just find a new tranny and do the needed gear change or say screw it and slap a built 351 or easier 302 and carb it up and gears or do what my friends say and junk it out????
PLEASE any suggestion from fellow enthusiastic explorians will help!

register it at your moms. and drop a 302 or 351. if you do the 351 you may have to bulk up the suspension alot so i would go with the 302 and gears.
 






I'd go with a 302 with either a AODE or 4R70W transmission, you'll also need a new transfer case since your 1354 won't fit. I'd suggest the 1356 manual from the F-series/Broncos.
 






You're in NoVA? I've got a buddy that is an AT specialist (Ford), and if you can tell me a few more details of the behavior, we may be able to salvage the tranny.

Do you still have 2nd? If not, it may just be a linkage issue. That tranny is designed to lock the drums to the input and output, like it's a solid shaft when in 2nd. I had the OEM tranny grenade on me at 80K, and I was still able to motor it 60 miles towing a trailer using 2nd. The tranny was, of course, toast. Got a reman with double the planetary gears in the drums. OEM has 3 per drum, reman has 6.
 






i've been lookin into the v8 swap as well.. you would say go with a 302? and the A4LD would hav to go? i've got 4.56s and A4LD (see sig for details)
