Hey I'm new to the forum with a 93 Explorer XLT. I just purchased it yesterday, I'm very excited. Its got 69000 miles and its a golden god! The Transmission operates great, shifts fine, goes in and out of 4X4/low with ease. But has a rattling/ticking noise when it operates. I plan to flush the tranny next week. Any ideas on what the noise could be?

Well Welcome to The Forum! And specify for everyone, does this sound take place while in basic High 4X4 or low or both? Or does this sound occur in both 2 and 4wheel drive? and how often is it occurring?

The sound occurs only in 2WD, when in neutral and drive. Stops when the rpm's are above 1200.

It happens when its hot and cold. Sometimes I can't hear it when its in neutral, or driving. I Probably can hear it 75% of the time though.

And also, I'm not sure if your saying the rattling and ticking is related or not, but sometimes your motor will tick if you don't have a motorcraft oil filter. Mine does that ever since I put my Fram on.

I don't think the exhaust is loose anywhere, I climbed underneath it tonight and the filter isn't a motocraft. I'm pretty sure its the tranny making the noise. Maybe I will have them drop the pan, change the filter and add new fluid. Like I said it operates great. When I floor the gas it shifts smooth and instantly. I like the way its operating, but the noise scares me!:yelexp:

have you gotten under there while it was running in neutral with (P) brake on, and listen around to make sure its coming from that area? The tranny sounds like its operating right, I dont know if when they need the fluid changed if they start making sounds or not....

yeah, I felt the tranny when it was in neutral and it was shaking a bit.

Then the fluid change is worth a shot, it'll need done sooner or later regardless so not going to hurt.

I will ask some mechanic friends next when I see them, I am a little less worried because it runs smoothly. But noises bug me.

Shouldn't be anything major but I know little noises can annoy you real quick lol

Maybe during the day when other forum members are on, they may be able to help you pin point the noise issue.

I just read something on the catalytic converter shield rattling due to spot welds breaking. Tomorrow I will check to see if that might be it (fingers Crossed). Thanks for the help.

Yeah, No prob. and yeah u should look at that, I've had one fall off while driving lol.

Well I took my new purchase to Firestone to have some maintenance done. I had the oil changed, and a transmission flush. They checked it out and told me the only things they could see that need to be done are a serpentine belt, and a tune up. Everything else looks good they said. I asked about the sound I was hearing and they didn't notice it. So they took it for a drive and said exhaust rattle. I'm so excited it wasn't anything big, and that it’s in as good of shape as I thought it was. Thanks for all the comments I received-Kenny! :yelexp:

Well, the Catalytic converter shield had broken tack welds. So I clamped it down, problem solved!!!!
