Trans full but losing pressure in corners?

Just installed a 4R70W into my Ranger and have experienced some problems. It seems that the fluid level is low in the trans even though it reads right on the dipstick. I lose pressure and get a flare on hard stops followed by acceleration or throttling out of corners. I also lost pressure backing my boat down the boat ramp (luckily once the truck settled it regained pressure). I tried putting a half quart more in but then it leaked out of the dipstick tube, so it would appear it is getting the right fluid level.
I was thinking maybe the filter/pickup dropped off of the valvebody?

Rookie mistake: didn't check the filter when I installed the trans. I mean, who a) drives a truck without a trans filter and then sends the trans off unaware (I might fall into that catagory) or 2) takes the filter out before shipping it...It had no filter. All is well now...
