I am getting ready to buy a '92 Sport from a member here, the 5speed 4x4 trans has only the 4rth gear. I am not familiar with the manual trans, but I have a feeling I will be soon. What is the difference between the M5od and the M5R1?
The trans apparantly went out while pulling a light trailer and small boat, no grinding, just quit, apparantly the clutch still works, he has put in 4rth and limped it up and down the block.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem is, or what caused it? I am picking the truck up on Saturday, will be able to look at it myself then.

The M5od Is A Mazda 5 Speed Overdrive And Is The Same As The Mr51 But The 5th And Reverse Synchros May Be Different Some Have Some Have 36 Teeth
And Some 30 Teeth According To Rebuild Applications This Goes For 87-on
I Have Seen These On Ebay Rebuilt Ones For 500.00 To 600.00 Dollars There Can Be Many Causes For The Tranny To Work Only In Fourthbut The First Thhing That Comes To Mind Is Linkage Binding Or Stuck Interlock Or Detent Pins Or Balls Or Binding Or Damaged Synchronizer Parts Will It Shift To The Other Gears And Just Not Go Or Is It Just Stuck In Fourth And Will Not Move Out Of Fourth If So Probably Synchro Dammage This Is All In My Own Opinion By All Means Im Am Not A Expert Have Not Dabbled With Manual Trannys Much. As Far As Special Tools Sometimes Special Alignment Jigs, bearing Having To Be Pressed On Etc But You Could Probably Do This One At Home Do A Search For A Manual To Guide You Take Your Time And You May Need To Have To Take Some Parts To Have Bearing Pressed Etc. If You Do This Maybe You Could Make A Diary Like The A4ld If Time Permits?

Are You Being Funny? You Know Here In Texas This How We Do It Run On Style

Thanks, I called around today and it looks like local places here will sell me one for $575, with a core swap and I put it in myself. Installed so far is about 400 more. Still debating whether to put it in myself or not, I dont have a lift, and I would hate to try to swap a trans with floor jack.
After doin some readin, I think it is the classic leaking plugs syndrome these trannys have, I will find out on sunday I guess when I check the fluid level.

Either way does not sound too bad. To do it yourself would be nice to save 400.00.
There is not that much to it. I see you live in waxahachie, if you can remove the foot off your floor jack you can buy transmission jack adapters for floor jacks at harbour
freight. the adapter slides in the hole the where the foot goes and walla you have a tranny jack. They also sell so-so quality tranny jacks for about 75.00, so you could do that as well. Also while you are there you might as well replace clutch, pressure plate,
release bearing, pilot bearing have flywheel resurfaced. Anyway good luck let us know what the problem was and how much you end up paying.(This is for glacier hey is my punctuation any better today just wanted to check with the english major)
