Strange problem I have been expriencing with my 95 Explorer 4.0 just had the trans replaced about 20,000 miles ago. It seems it disengages from drive while using a/c. It revs then I just hit the shifter down more and I hear it re-engage into drive. Is it possible that the linkage cable for the trans may need adjustment? I'm not sure if it matters but the orange indicator in the gauge pod seems to be slightly off from whatever gear I'm in mainly in drive.

I recently had the same problem on my wife's 94 cougar. The range sensor on the transmission was bad. $110.00 for the part!

Call me stupid but.....what exactly is a range sensor?

From my understanding it is basically a switch that is connected to the gearshift lever that sends the signal to the transmission which gear you select,.

Ahhh very interesting.......do you know where the sensor is located at?

It should be on the side of the transmission where the shift linkage hooks up.

my dad had a problem like that with his dekoda. it had the wrong type of tranny fluid in it

is it hard to replace?

I had the part replaced by a transmission shop because I had no way of testing it. It takes a scan tool to check for codes. The actual part looks like it would be easy to install, although it may need to be calibrated.
