transfer case help

hi just wanted to know if any one could help me out i have a 97 explorer when i put into 4wd it just clunks loud into 4wd then jolts and wont go anywhere didnt know if this could be the transfer chain and also when im not in 4wd and accelerate from a stoped start the diffs jitter a bit didnt know if tht could be caused from the 4wd any info would be great i dont want to pull it all out if it could be sumin simple but probly not

I would get under there and have a look at the drive shafts, to see if the universal joints are OK. Also the transfer case & differentials, have you checked the fluid levels & condition. These are all things you should do anyway, so you're not out anything.
 






hi thanks for the reply. where abouts are the universal joints. yeah ive checkes the fluids and rifilled um but still does all the symtoms i said
 






checked the universal joints they look good no cracks or signs of wear
 






Kiinda common sense but if theres anything accessible and should rotate freely make sure it rotates and theres no binding in the drive line away from the transfer case

Check all shafts and joints to make sure they turn and move like they should. Make sure there is no binding anywhere that isn't IN the transfer case.
