Transfer case issues.

i need help lol i have a 97 ford explorer with a 4.0 v 6 auto tranny and the electric shift transfer case . i will be going down the road in 2 wheel drive when all of a sudden the transfer case will kick into nuetural and then the truck wont move unless put in to 4 low can anybody help ????? where should i start looking ?
 






does it coast from neutral? or does it "lock up" - like screeching halt?

is it stuck in 4low now? meed more details
 












Rebuild that case

This is what I am working on right now...exact same symptoms. So far I have replaced the range fork bushings, HI/LOW collar, all seals, and added a bronze bushing to the rear case half. I would imagine your case could be suffering from the same issues mine, and many others have. You can rebuild it yourself, or purchase a re-manufactured unit. Don't waste your time with a salvaged unit, unless it is very low mileage, and very inexpensive. I think you can also change over to a manual unit, maybe a 1354.
