So the "Check Transmission" popped up in the message center the other day along with the infamous flashing O/D light. After extensive reading on this problem I broke down and took it to dealer to at least get the diagnostics. Here is my problem:

2005 4.0L 4x4 with 110,000 miles last change AT fluid at 95,000 (No it is not low). Doesn't drive poorly, shifts just fine, warnings only go off after a few minutes at highway speed.

Dealer says there is a valve stuck in the valve body and looks like the solenoid pack is on its way out. They priced both repairs at around $1800. Clearly, I am not getting repaired at dealer. But I would like to know if you all think the diagnosis is appropriate? Could I start with solenoids first and hope for the best or what should my next step be?

Thanks!

My 2004 did it, flashing "OD OFF" light, code indicated Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid inoperative.

I knew, however, by watching my tachometer, that the clutch was not engaging.

Ordered solenoid module on-line, installed it myself: $ 185.

Yes, there likely is a valve at fault in the valve body: the valve actuated by the solenoid. No guarantee, but if you post the trouble code(s), we'll talk further. imp
