Does the transmission need to be changed in this generation of Explorer? I have heard yes and no. It's doesn't have a dip stick and as far as I know it doesn't even have a drain plug. My vehicle, which I am trying to sale, has 106K miles on it and I would like to change the transmission fluid if it is necessary. I guess I should check the owners manual.

Is it the original transmission?

I don't know that there is a correct answer other than NOT to get a "flush" done at a shop. Many will tell you to drop the pan (or at least drain it) and replace what you get out. Repeat that a couple times in a month and you'll get most of the nearly 12 quarts changed. You should drop the pan once to change the filter in that time.

Do a search on here about how to fill/check the fluid level. There is a very good video on here that is easy to find.

The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

150K interval? (Page 32) Most change fluid well before 100K. Use Mercon V only.
