I have a 98' Mercury Mountaineer 5.0L with 112xxx miles on it and noticed there's tranny oil around my transmission. I know nothing about transmissions but was wanting to know why it's like that? It's not leaking or anything just looks like it's sweating.

I was wanting to change my tranny oil anyways and maybe look into getting a shift kit put in it and maybe change the gearing. What do most people recommend doing to your transmission on here?

What's the best tranny oil to use? Transmissions have filters in them right? What's a good filter to use? Good shift kit? etc. Please give me some input.

Amsoil is better. (actually Amsoil is probably the best thing you can possibly do for it)You can get all the stuff you need to do the change from them. Or if you don't wan to do it yourself I know there are some places out there that offer Amsoil as an option.

I haven't done the shift kit yet, but I understand that Transgo is a good option.

I had a small leak on my tranny and added some stop leak to it and it did the trick.

I would try that b4 you try anything else so you can eliminate that problem first.
Your tranny (assuming it's the same as mine) holds 13.9 qts so when you buy the stop leak make sure you get enough for that large of a capacity. Then if that works you can change the fluid, filter etc.

If that doesn't work, then you need to find out where the leak is coming from and fix that first.

Here's a link with instructions on changing the fluid yourself http://www.syntheticwarehouse.com/amsoil_technical_service.htm

good luck

oh yea, also full synthetic will keep your seals in better shape than conventional oil.

A few of us here I know are dealers, (I just became one recently) but if you don't want to do the work yourself then start making phone calls to where you do want to go.
I know the mechanic I normally go to would gladly put in whatever oil I give him and only charge me for the labor.

Isn't Aldive a dealer for Amsoil?
