1998 Ford Explorer XLT
Im new to this so I apologize in advance if I post in the wrong thread.

I have a 98 Ford explorer 4.0 V6 XLT 4x4 that needs a new transmission.

it is an automatic transmission.
I dont know if it is 4 or 5 speed.

I have tried to look it up and find out what tranny I have but have not gotten a conclusive answer.

I have called junk yards and some say there is only one tranny for that 98 year and some say there are more than one.

which is it?

I think it is a OHV since it says 4.0 EFI on the plastic intake under the hood.

I would really appreciate your help.

the vin number has an "X" on the 8th spot.

Thanks!

transmission code should be on the inside door jam tag

Im pretty sure the tranny is shot...

I bought if off a co-worker that was the original owner. The radiator had cracked and allowed antifreeze aka water into the tranny. It had been sitting for a while so I replaced the radiator and had my ford dealer flush out the tranny twice.

She had been running it without a dip stick for I dont know how long so there was tons of debris.

they told me to drive it and flush it out in 3 months again. It didnt make it past the first month.

I have read from these informative forums that water causes the seals in the tranny to fail or the seals absorb the water and the glue fails.

It was slipping between 2-3 gears so I was just going to try the valve body gasket process but then the reverse began to fail and then every gear so I decided to just look into replacing the entire tranny.

I just want to make sure I have the right transmission. Since the parts dealer I asked said there were different ones depending on if you have a OHV or SOHC. I read 4.0 EFI under the hood so according to a post on here that means it is a OHV (Over head Valve) and not a SOHC (single over head cam) it is parked at my inlaws so ill have to check the sticker on the driver door post to see what it says.
