I have a 95 Explorer with 84k and I had the transmission rebuilt by Aamco back in May. This past weekend (8/23/02) I had the seals replaced. On my way up to Oklahoma, I started to experience a high piched whine whenever I accelerated. The accleration seemed a bit sluggish, but I was able to maintain highway speeds. I have a warranty with Aamco, so I will be taking it back there, but I was curious to see if anyone else had any ideas as to what it could be. (This noise happens at all speeds and all gears).

Thanks,
Jonathan

tranny

I've got a similiar problem with my 96 with 90k on it. I'm taking it to Cottman tomorrow to have it checked.

I'll let you know the verdict.

I have had a whine in my drivetrain somewhere whenever I press the gas, I'm not sure where it comes from, but its done it since very shortly after the truck was bought.

I am on my 2nd 4R70W transmission (dealer installed 2nd one @ 45k miles). I was having symptoms as such:

extremley sluggish
poor gas milleage
harsh/rough shifting (lunges forward)
delaying going into gear or not going at all
jumping or heistating in rough stop/go traffic

I too can maintain speeds at no problem, but getting up to speed is very difficult, 15 seconds to 60 is average and my gas mileage is about 9 around town.

any of this sound familiar? These problems began occuring at 45k miles, thye swapped the tranny and they continued, I am now at 67k miles and the ford dealer swears there is no problem

"its just picky" they say... lemme know

Tranny Hell

Okay, I just got the diaganosis, I'm going over to take alook myself, but here is the damage,

The symptoms, Irregular shifting, noise at 3,000 rpms, loss of power.

The cause:
The front planet is shot which caused the following 1st set of clutch pack damaged, the ware plate damaged, and a drum is shot.

The cost at Cottman Tranny:

To repair just the broken parts is 1897.61, This is with labor and everything, 6 month warrenty

To bring the tranny to today's factor specs, and tollarances and updates and stuff is 2247.51. 1 year warrenty

Now i called a couple ford dealers and their cost for a remanufactured tranny is 1900, and 2500 with labor and a 2 year warrenty.

So, since Cottman is going to charge me 375 for taking it out, and putting it back in, which is included in the above cost, i've decided to just let them remanufacture it. I figure it is already out of the truck, and by the time i pay the 375 + 1900 + tax i'm far beyond the cost of them doing it.

This one hurt, this will be my last automatic.

Cottman treated me right. I recently had mine remanned by them and they did a fantastic job. This was after a botched rebuild by another mechanic. Cottman turned the truck around in 2 days and have been nothing short of excellent.

I know it sucks to have to get it rebuilt, but at least you're in good hands.

BTW, definately get the more expensive service. It's worth it both for the updates and the warranty.

Mine make a howl too, noticible at all speeds mostly at about 55-60. Sounds kind of like the axle gears (where the sound seems to come from) but if I take my foot off gas and coast the sound goes away. Does this sound like my tranny? If it is am I better to drive it till the thing quits in hopes AA or whaterev company on the board get agood alternative or fix it now?
Someone also said there is an upgrade you can have them do to the current tranny to make it stronger for wheeling etc. Does anyone know what i mean and if I get it done what do I need to have them do?
Thanks for answering so many questions
Blake

OUCH! those are some high dollar repairs.. what in the world is wrong with ford and their transimssion problems?

btw, any idea what to look for in a "reliable" shop? I'm so fed up with dealers.. I was washing my car the other day, and noticed 2 big scuffs on each rim.. the dealership scratched my chrome rotating my tires... I'm more than fed up with them.... I should complain, but of course their so damn snotty they'd never admit that they SUCK

can anybody answer some or all of my questions?

sorry blake, didn't really see that oyu asked a question, I just skimmed the post.. uh, mine has done exactly what you're talking about at any speed above 40mph since we bought it new.. it goes away when I coast too, I assume its just the 3.73, if its anything like a chevy 3.73 thats a very large 3 series gear and can whine easily

hmm I hope that is what it is, just seems like it is getting louder, I mean I REALLY HOPE it is nothing but usually when I have a feeling like this it is more than that.
Anyone know (reguardless of when or if I have to have it done) what to tell the tranny guy to do to upgrade the tranny?
Thanks

from what I have heard...

... this is the limited slip gears in combo with the AWD transfer case but I am not sure that I trust ford all that much. I have had the whine since new and I run this truck pretty hard some days. The whine can be rather loud at high speeds and especially annoying on trips. I just gave up on trying to figure it out between the blower and exhuast... it's just another noise. Does anyone know for sure what it is... should we be running to our nearest tranny shop for a rebuild or what?

I dont trust ford at all.. they could tell me the sky is blue and that water is wet and I wouldn't beleive them until i at least asked someone else.. ok so bad examples.. but I've lost all faith in ford as a company.

I've found since I added my flowmasters that the whine isn't really noticable over the exhaust tone, it never really was loud enough to be annoying anyway.

if its getting louder, you may wanna have it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing. AKA not a ford dealer
