Troubles w/ digital thermometer

I have a 97 xlt, 5.0. My digital temp guage that is located on the headliner is acting up. It reads a constant -40, and ICE. I know its been cold here in NC, but not that cold. any suggestions on what the problem could be? Any reply's would be appreciated.

someone else on here today - was having the same exact opposite problem (ie: temp stuck at 140), you may need to replace the sensor thats located on your radiator (lower left i think?) anyway the part number should be E4LY15A022A appx. $33, now in 97 they did make two different sensors, one for the limited and one for every other x, this should be the one for the every other x's.
