1998 ford explorer 2 door
hello guys,
im new here after deciding to sign-up after the purchase of a 1998 ford explorer 2 -door suv . thought maybe i could come here for some helpful advice about my truck. engine light come on so i took my truck by auto zone to have it diagnosed, the results from the test were codes P0704 , P0701; PCM has determined that the transmission control system is out of range for the current engine operating conditions , failed clutch pedal switch , open or shorted circuit condition. has any of you guys had this in the past. i bought the truck like 2 months ago and i drive it around 90 miles a day back and forth to work and i have noticed alot of times the tranny is not shifting so smoothly or changing gears to soon. i changed the tranny filter 2 weeks ago to to see if this would help and it did a little but its still not right. if anyone has any info. im willing to hear all advice. im not a novice but i am a novice with the explorer. thank you guys ,
jeff

Hello Jeff,

I have a 2000 Explorer XLT with the 6-cyl. 4.0L SOHC engine, and I had both of those codes at the same time. After some research, in my case it seemed to be the mass airflow (MAF) sensor. I removed the sensor, and sprayed the hell out of it with electrical contact cleaner. I reinstalled the sensor and replaced the air filter, then cleared the codes. It was fine for a year, then the codes came back. I just repeated the MAF cleaning, and cleared the codes again. As far as the rough shift, I had what is called the "shift flare issue". In my case, the transmission would rev high in second gear before shifting to third gear. If you search these forums you will find some threads. Here is the main one: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174202 . And another: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181371 . In my case, I had a rebuilt valve body installed to the tune of $750. This completely resolved the problem. Good luck !

Here's a thread regarding the P0171 & P0174 codes: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=300224

expl0rerct thank you for the advice. i will do that very soon. i have a can of contact cleaner. my transmission has the "shift flare issue" also. sounds like i should start sticking some cash back for a transmission rebuild. by the way are you from connecticut , just asking because i see the ct @ the end of your username. thanks again my friend.
