Troubleshooting the 5r55 transmission for dummies

1) check the fluid...there is no dip stick, here are the instructions.

(dead links)

transmission codes mean in laymen's terms

3) check the fluid pressure...this thread will help with the procedure. again I would like help explaining what incorrect pressures indicate in terms of parts replacement

4) change the fluid...this thread will help you change the fluid

5) check the servos...this will help you understand servos

6) check the solenoids...here is the process to check the solenoids.

I need advice. My 03 Explorer recently started shifting very slow to second gear. My opinion is that it was the servos, so I ordered a set. While waiting for a set of servos with the o-ring modification my Explorer transmission stopped working completely while parked at work...no forward no reverse...no movement at all.

I checked the codes and they are PO732 PO735

I dropped the pan and there was troubling amount of metal shavings on the magnet.

The servos are not visibly damaged although it was difficult to get a good view of the bore with a mirror and a light.

The solenoid block tested ok. I was not able to figure out the procedure to test the TOT sensor.

I was not able to figure out how to test the torque converter on a non-working transmission.

I am wondering what my next step should be. Should I remove the Transmission and replace it? Or is there something else I should try?

Tip for removing servos

I am sure that I am not the first to discover this method to access the servo snap rings, but I have not seen it posted any where.

You can access and have a full unobstructed view of the servo covers above the catalytic converter (with out removing the converter) by removing the right front tire, inner fender well and upper heat shield.

I am still searching for information on...What the codes po732 and po735 mean?...and what parts are possibly bad and should be checked based on those codes?

i have a trans dipstick on my 99xlt i think its a 5r55. its a 4.0sohc. does having the dipstick mean its not a 5r55?

I am not sure what transmission that you have. You can look at the door sticker to see what the trans code is, and post a question or call a dealer for an answer.

My door code is D which for my year on the charts says it is a 5r55e and my owners manual says in its charts that the trans is a 5r55e but it also shows the dipstick in its illustrations under the hood and I do.have one. So what does that mean? I highly doubt its anything aftermarket. Could it be that for my year the 5r55 had a dipstick?

Yes, I am no authority on transmissions. I just started this thread to help people avoid having to do all the searching and reading that I did. Much of this research is applicable to more than just one transmission.
