Hey guys quick problem.....

I was driving tonight, taking off from a red light, normal accel, and all of a sudden the truck lurched, and shifted back into first gear, and wouldn't shift back out of it. So I rode in first for about 2 mins, and then let off the gas, and it shifted into second, but then every time I would try to accel a little bit, when I would hit a certain pressure on the gas pedal the truck would shift back into first, and not shift back at all. Stupid thing. So I don't know what to do. Dealer time?

Thanks for any help!

Anybody got anything? Just a quick idea before I call the dealer?

Tranny is going. that basically sums it up. Bump this 2 more times and you will be at 1000 posts! :)

Same here, 95% chance you will need a rebuild

My mustang did that after the motor swap...It was a vacum line that was disconnected.

if you put the gear selector in 2 does it work

Mike, if you have a multimeter handy, check out the TPS first. It's a quick test and you might get lucky. The TPS affects the transmission shifting.

Mike's got a good idea, there. Every shift on that transmission (4R44E aka A4LDE "E" means electronic) is electronically controlled by the PCM. Some fault in the electronic controls and you have shifting problems. Try running the EEC-IV "quick test" and see if the PCM sees any problems that it hasn't reported yet.

Why does everyone say you need a re-build when the transmission won't shift properly? There are numerous parts to a drivetrain. Transmission is not the only thing. And besides, even if the tranny goes, it's usually just one part you can fix much cheaper than a complete rebuild.

this just happened to me on my performance rebuilt a4ld trans. it was the governor. it might need to be cleaned or replaced, mine was real dirty from hard offroading. replaced it and its fine now.

Billy177: Nope, tried that...

Runnin'OnEmpty: I told them to check it after reading your post, but everything was fine in that area.

Got it back today... new trans. The guy said the trans was ****, and couldn't be salvaged. The 2nd gear clutchpak was completely gone I guess, and he said the others were in a bad way. I guess I can see where he's coming from, because the truck drives totally different now that there is a new trans. All the shift points are different, shifts are smoother, and I just notice a big difference.

Thanks for all the help though guys, I really appreciate it.

Mine won't shift out of second. I have a code scanner. Any suggestions?
Was shifting late but it went all the way thru the gears until it sat a couple weeks. Thanks for any ideas.
