I want to lift my explorer a little bit because i just got my 31s but it would look so much better if it was lifted up a little bit. How much can I lift by just doing a TT in the front? And what would I need to do to the rear to lift it the same amount? Mine is a 1997 2wd with V8 5.0L engine. Thanks

I know how to do the lift, but how much lift can i get out of a TT? i have heard of people getting up to 3" but some complain about the ride but some say it is fine. Where would i get the longer bolts for these because i dont think i can get that much lift out of just stock bolts. and if i was to get 3" or so out of the front, how do i get that much out of the rear. shackles only lift it 1.5" so i would need more. And my car is 2wd and i did put that in the original question. Thanks for your help.

This is just one of those things that you are going to have to figure out for your self. Not trying to be a hard ass, but all trucks are different. Some trucks can only get 1.5" from a TT, some can get 2" or even 3" (we'll discuss this one later). There just isn't a correct answer to your question.
You have to experiment with your truck.

BOLTS
Take one out and go down to the local hardware store and get a grade 8 bolt that matches the thread pattern, but the size you want, then go back home and put them in.

For the rear end
Warrior shackles will give you around 1.5" of lift.
Any shackle will give you 1/2 of half the length of the shackle, so if the total length of the shackle (eye to eye) is 6", then you will get 1.5" of lift.
1/2 of 6" is 3" and 1/2 of that is 1.5".

Add-a-leafs can also pick up the rear. How much I don't know. They will give you a harder ride, as they don't let the spring move as much.
Some people have used the Warrior shackles AND AAL's. I have ridden in a truck with this configuration, and didn't like it. Too rough IMHO.

Also IMHO you don't need anything more than the lift that the Warrior shackles will give you for 31" tires. Any more than that is makes the truck look funny. You want the tires to fill in the fenders and look full.

Back to lifting the front and How much

We know that you have 4x2, so CV angles are not a problem for you.

In an IFS (Independent Front Suspension) the more you adjust the torsion bars, the less DOWN travel you will have.
Going over a bumpy road the wheel will travel down when it comes across a hole in the road. This cushions the ride and you don't feel it too much. The truck stay fairly level, because the wheels are take the brunt of the impact by moving up and down. Without this up and down movement of the wheels. the whole truck would move up and down. Try rolling a toy car that does not have springs on it across a washboard and see how badly the whole thing moves up and down. Roll it over the washboard hard enough and the car WILL LOOSE CONTROL, because the wheels are bouncing off the ground. Not a good thing.
The more that you adjust the torsion bars up, the less down travel you get, and the more bounce the whole truck gets.
You want the wheel to roll over a bump by the spring of the suspension letting the wheel go up over the bump and getting down fast as soon after the bump. Increasing the the spring tension on the torsion bars by adjust the truck higher also makes it harder to make the wheel go up when it hits a bump so the cab actually starts to move up also. Now the wheel won't move up as much as it used to AND you have less down movement, given a big enough bump and fast enough, your wheel just left the ground and you are flying! No contact with the road mean you have no control. You are just a guided missile. Hit a bump in a curve and I Guarantee YOU WILL BE GOING STRAIGHT!

[soapbox]
I know that you are young and probably don't have a lot of money to do modifications, but is it really worth looking GOOD or BADASS at the expense of your safety or those around you? Just a thought.

Making your truck look nice, is not for the faint of wallet. It cost money to make a BADASS truck. If you don't have the cash, then save your money and wait until you do have it. Don't compromise your safety for looks. [/soapbox]

yea i have put the safety into consideration. Thats why I posted this thread to find out if doing too much of a TT would do harm. Thanks for your help.
