Hello everyone,
I was wondering whether anyone has done a TTB swap on a 2WD IFS Explorer. My buddy has a 97 Explorer Sport with the following mods:
-"B" Torsion Bars from V8 4WD Explorer
-4-leaf pack from V8 4WD Explorer
-Aftermarket solid swaybar with Energy Suspension poly bushings/Aftermarket endlinks
-Aftermarket rear swaybar with poly bushings/homemade swaybar disconnects
-Energy Suspension low-pro bumpstops
-Bilstein Shocks (Accept no substitute)
-K&N FIPK
-Warrior WAR-153 hammertone rear lift shackles
-Eagle 589 style wheels with 31x10.5x15" AT's
-Eaton Posi with 4.56 ring/pinion

I am thinking that if he does the TTB swap (if it is possible) from say a F-150, then he can get more lift, and a better ride. Say, a pre-runner explorer I guess.

Any ideas or experience?

I'd tell him to go to a solid axle and not to TTB. I've never heard of anyone wanting to go to a TTB from an IFS.

I'd talk to either CoryL or LizardTrac about doing solid axle swaps on 2nd gen Explorers.

Solid Axle swap.... Well the whole problem is that it is a 2WD after all. I don't think that he is interested in doing a 4WD conversion. So as a 2WD, especially for high speed pre-running, I believe that the TTB would be his best bet. Besides, he could put a decent lift on it, since there are no kits for the 97 IFS other than the Pro Comp. TTB would allow more lift, and a plusher ride; combined with a spring-over conversion on the rear. By the way, he also has add-a-leaves in the 4WD rear spring pack.

If I were him I'm go with the 2wd lift spindles up front and the SOA in the rear, and fab up dual shocks in the front if he's going do to a lot of high-speed offroading. IMO it would be very difficult to swap to the ttb, even harder than doing the SAS.

EDIT:
so 3" in front with the spindles
2" in front twisting the torsion bar adjusters
5" in the rear with SOA
3" body lift

8" isn't too shabby, and 35s would fit easily with some trimming, does he want to go larger than 35s? Actually, for prerunning you don't want too much lift cause you want to have a low center of gravity. You could look into fiberglass fenders from www.perrysfabnfiber.com and go with less lift. I'm running 33s with only 2.25" of lift. You could easily run 35s with 5" of suspension lift, the fenders, and trimming.
