Hi, I'm new here.

I have a 5.0 engine, 92,000 miles. I had a substantial tune up last spring ($580)..at about the 70,000 mile mark, new plugs, wires, etc....

A few weeks ago the engine began running and idling a little rough again, and I'm told I need another major tune up.

Is this normal, or am I being hosed?

Welcome to the site.. It possibly could be a spark problem.. I would start looking at your spark plug wires for any wear.. Also do you remember what type of plugs were installed? Hopefully they didn't install some crappy spark plugs but you never know.. You could also try cleaning the Mass airflow sensor & the Idle Air controller. Also check to see the condition of your air filter.. I've seen people leave the original filter in for over 100,000 miles. It would also help to do a compression check to see if the cylinders are okay but I don't suspect that being a problem with the 302 V8.

thanks for the reply Blee1099.

Actually I had the plugs and plug wires replaced last spring...they were the expensive plugs....had previously replaced the idle air controller. And I keep it well maintained, changing the air filter every 6 or 7 thousand miles.

I initially thought I might have a tranny problem because the vehicle would "shudder" when going up a small but steady incline....but the tranny checked out OK....I had noticed it backfiring when I really stepped on it out on the Interstate a week or so ago...

maybe I just need another tune up, but I sure hope I don't have to do this every year...

They might be expensive to you but the service center probably charged a nice increase.. I like to pull the plugs every 20k miles & check & re-gap the plugs if necessary. I would definately try cleaning the IAC & MAF sensors, its good preventive maintance and don't forget to change that air filter or clean it if you have an K&N or similar.
