U-Joints Anyone?

Ok, here's the deal. Whenever I put the car into drive and give it some gas, I hear a few clicks from the front driveshaft/transfer case area. Then when I hit the brakes, I hear one additional click. The same happens with reverse. Now I also have about an inch of "twistableness" in the front driveshaft. Someone please help, is it the transfer case, u-joints or worse??

I have a 97 sport with control track and whenever you come to a stop or switch gears the driveshafts disengauge and you can hear them clicking in and out. I don't know if thats is what your hearing but it made me wonder the first time i noticed it.
