I've just spent a couple hours reading all the tranny maintainance info on these threads...also the o/d light flashing problems. I hate to go the effort & expence of changing the tranny oil & filter if it's too late. It's not shifting from 1st to 2nd properly - revving too high before shifting. This started yesterday & today the o'd light is flashing. I bought the ex used w/ 165,000 and now have 212,000 mi. Do not know if tranny has ever been serviced. What do y'all think?
Peace - Alex

i would change it just to check if that was it or not... yeah its like $100 but if that solves your problem, thats a lot cheaper than a $2500 rebuild....

Based on your description, I think your tranny is in need of repair, I would have it checked by a good trannt shop and save the ATF for later.

Good luck.....

actually, i was more leaning towards that myself... thats a lot of mileage for any tranny....

Thanks guy's - oops - somehow logged off when trying to say thanks! I don't have the cash to rebuild right now so may be hoofing around for awhile.

2 winters ago my tranny wasn't shifting correctly. It would rev real high in 1st and hold at a high RPM before shifting to 2nd. After the truck warmed up it seemed better. I took it right in to an oil change place and had them flush the tranny for the 1st time. No problems after that and that was 20K miles ago. I do it once every year now.

Govenor problems

Sounds like govenor problems - do a search for govenor and see if that doesnt shed some light on your problems. Also could be a simple valve body gasket problem.

Good Luck

I'm with SteveVB. You might just be able to drop the pan, pull the valve body assembly, and replace the low/reverse servo seal while you are there and recover driveability. Governor may just need pulling, cleanup and bore polishing and reassembly. Both within modest capabilities and cost.

DON'T get the tranny flushed with that kind of milage on it. Most shops will probably refuse to do it anyway. Your best bet is to take it to a shop and have it inspected. If everything is ok, then they can forego the fluid and filter change.

Ackk...should've logged on earlier!
Just replaced the filter & am trying to do the old "start for a couple seconds, drain and replace fluid a quart at a time" flush. It was dirty inside the pan w/ almost 0 metel shavings on the magnet. I'm going to go ahead & finish the flush, replace the TP sensor and then go back in if necessary.
Thanks again for y'alls help - too cool!

Does anybody have pics of this? Do you have to drop the pan to access the governor? I'd like to try this before taking it in to the shop. Thanks again y'all!

Howdy again - Changing the fluid & filter and the TPS did'nt seem to do much. After resetting thr computer the o/d light started flashing again after 10 miles.

Have driven every day & it seems to be shifting o.k. but it's so s-l-o-w. I know it's got many miles but would like to fix it or will be forced to sell (no$$)

No, you do not have to drop the pan to try celaning up the governor bore. It's in the tailshaft housing, you do have to remove the transfer case. Here's a description (posted above by SteveVB from the Explorer Maintenaince site - a great site btw). You may want to get the ATSG manual on the transmission $20 or less.

Good luck. Let us know how it comes out.

Happy Exploring

Chris

Thanks Glacier991 - I'm not sure whar the tailshaft housing is & could'nt find "5 bolts" that were described as having to b e removed to access the governor - thats why I was hoping that someone might have some pictures.
Peace
