My explorer has started to WHINE under the hood and I can not isolate the noise. It only happens when the ambient temp out side is over 90. Also only at idle. I changed the fan clutch thinking that was the problem but it was not. It does not over heat no coolant leaks. I put my hand on the plastic intake and that seems to be where the noise comes from , also the vibration that coralates to the noise. Anybody have any ideas?????

If it's a loud pitched whistling noise, check your IAC.

Do a search first, you'll better understand where it is and how to fix it, good luck.

I just replaced the idler and tensioner pulleys. It was making a whining noise after it warmed up. About $30 and an hour of wrench twirling. I’d check the pulleys?

Joe, you're displaying classic syptoms of IAC problem. Try cleaning it. If that doesn't work, replace.

I only know of one part on the explorer that can make a whineing noise and thats the altanator.

Bad IAC

Cleaned the IAC and the noise is still present. I will have to replace it.
Thanks for the info

Try pulling the filter (black cap) off of your IAC and see if that makes the sound go away, if so it's your IACV. If it's really loud it's more than likely the IACV, I've never heard and alternator or tensioners whine. My alternator rattled like a **** when it went and my tensioner and idler pullies just fall off when they go bad. :p

To eliminate any serp belt related items start it up and run it a short time with the belt off.
